Congratulations to the Highland Village Pet Adoption Center Open House for setting a new record! Over 50 furry felines and canines were adopted just in time for the holidays! The adoption center will remain open this week for last minute adopting opportunities. (photographed: event chairs, Tena Faust and Tama Lundquist and Buster's Friends board member Heather Fields)
The Story: What began three years ago as a four-week holiday mobile pet adoption program has turned into a year-round initiative to save thousands of Houston’s cats and dogs from being euthanized. When Tena Faust, Tama Lundquist, and Tim Maloney approached Highland Village owner, Haidar Barbouti, about using space at Highland Village as a “Home For The Holidays” for cats and dogs on the verge of being euthanized, Barbouti, an animal lover, said absolutely. And, “Home For The Holidays” was born in the old GAP building on Westheimer. Hundreds of volunteers and dozens of Houston-based rescue groups came together and adopted several hundred animals the first year.

Everyone is high on Houston! In the July 9th, 2009 edition of The Economist, an article entitled, "Lone Star Rising" expressed how great our city is.
Joel Kotkin, an urbanologist based in California compiled a list of the best cities for job creation over the last decade. Among those with more than 450,000 jobs, the top 5 spots went to the 5 main Texaplex cities. He particularly admires Houston, which he calls a perfect example of an "opportunity city"-a place with lots of jobs, lots of cheap housing and a welcoming attitude to newcomers. Not many cities could have absorbed 100,000 refugees post-hurricane Katrina. Houston has vibrant Asian communities, a balanced Hispanic community, a good mix of white and black, with no discernable racial tensions and more foreign consulates than any other American city with the exception of New York and Los Angeles.
Houston stands out as America's most enthusiastically cosmopolitan city, a place where the future has already arrived.

Calling all you downtown working girls (think Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, not Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman). Did you know that any cab ride within downtown Houston costs only $6? Yep, it's true. Why? Glad you asked. As part of an effort to offer an alternative to current daytime mass transit options in Houston, the Mayor's office wants you to commute faster and at a flat rate.

1. The ebullient spirit of our citizens
2. Our eclectic demographics are setting a precedent for other cities to follow
3. The entrepreneurship and opportunities afforded to everyone who is willing to step up to the plate
4. My personal hero and grandfather was Jakie Freedman who founded the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas and really knew the real Rat Pack
5. When Jakie asked Judge Elkins what would happen if he took his money out of First City National Bank, the Judge said it would fold, so he is credited with saving the bank during the Depression

Painting the town red is so passé. How passé is it? It is so passé that if red and white were the last two colors standing on Project Runway, Heidi Klum would say "Red - you're out. Auf Wiedersehen. White, that means you're in." Houston, it's time to paint the town white!
If U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu has anything to do with it, Houston will definitely be seeing a lot of white paint - on the roofs. At the recent climate change symposium in London, Secretary Chu said that by "making roads and [flat] roofs a paler color [it] could have the equivalent effect of taking every car in the world off the road for 11 years." Talk about energy efficiency!

Around the world, antique shopping has long been 'tres chic'. London, Paris, Rome, Buenos Aires...resale/purchasing of old collectables has always been in vogue. One can buy antiques at auctions, shops, shows, internationally and online. You may even discover treasures at garage sales and flea markets.
But, before you make any purchase, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, and the Professional Show Managers Association, a not-for-profit organization representing antiques and collectibles show producers, say it's a smart buyer who learns about the differences between genuine antiques, reproductions, and their fake counterparts.

Last week was the official "green" week in Houston (as well as the rest of the world) as Earth Day and Arbor Day were celebrated Wed. 22nd and Fri. 24th. The entire week was devoted to the betterment of our planet and its resources, but we should be having Earth Day EVERY DAY!
We want to know what YOU did to celebrate Earth Day or Arbor Day this year. Did you plant a tree, carpool or make a conscious decision to recycle? Did you buy an organic tee, use a cloth bag at the grocery store or buy a hybrid? Let us know through your comments.

We have been hearing a lot about "Going Green". It is really about consideration of the environment, the eco-system, of what nature has to offer and not ruining it with poisonous materials, and excess. You should think about everything you do, and how it will effect the earth, the atmosphere, your real health, and the health of the generations to come. If you are building a home, check out New Living at 6111 Kirby Drive. Call 713 521-1921 or go to www.NewLiving.net

Yay! It’s that time of year again when the Bayou City becomes more bountiful with everything, especially parties! As any well-heeled Houstonite (remember Houstonian + Socialite = Houstonite) knows, most spring soirees are philanthropic in nature with a fundraising focus. These events allow us the opportunity to sport our latest fashion finds and catch up with friends while supporting a great cause. What’s not to love?

How many Aggies does it take to change a light bulb? Old joke. No laughing matter.
Whether you are a Longhorn, Owl or Cougar (and yes, even you, Aggies) we all can do a little somethin' somethin' for the environment. But did you know that by changing a single light bulb you may also be doing something for your bank account?
In my line of work we are in constant search for ways to save energy (translation: money) for our customers. More times than naught, lighting leads. Half of a customer's energy savings usually involve upgrades to lighting in some form or another. Turning off a light switch is fine when you are not in a room, but the following 4 steps are even better!
