Affordable Luxury: Jewelry by Olga Prieto

Olga Prieto, an expat from Europe, used to take afternoon walks a picturesque outdoor market in Mexico. On one fortuitous day, she discovered a talented artisan whom she commissioned to design jewelry for herself and friends. Instead of following the trends at the time, Prieto only designed jewelry that she imagined herself wearing. Her collection debuted six years ago at The Museum of Modern Art in Mexico D.F.

Prieto was inspired by the glamorous Mexico City socials as well as the rustic craftsmanship characteristic of Latin America.  Dichotomous no longer, she fused the two inspirations into a boutique jewelry line. Sold in France, Japan, England, and her native Spain, Prieto’s combination of semi-precious stones and gold plated brass is both exquisite and fascinating.  Turquoise, amethyst, sapphire, coral, and green onyx are a few of the gems within the collection. Still handmade by artisans, each stone is faceted differently, and no two pieces are identical. From cocktail rings with chunky stones to Cleopatra-esque bracelets to chains, the look is unique and unlike anything you’ll ever find at The Galleria.

J’adore DiorShow…do you? Next time, try Dior Extase. The newest Dior mascara on the market, Extase ($28), has a tiered brush a la couture dresses. This innovative wand can cover every lash for a panoramic look. It takes the mascara to a new level, with different types of fibers that expand after application. Use three coats for a very dramatic look.

If you’re a classic MAC Zoomlash fan, try their newest release, Studio Fix Lash ($13), which has a skinny rubber wand. This prevents clumping by design and separates lashes. It held a curl really well.  If you’re in search of extreme length, try Tarte’s Lights, Camera, and Lashes ($18) mascara. If you are a fan of packaging, it has a purple faux snakeskin cover.

If you’re considering eyelash extensions or catwalk lashes, pick up YSL Faux Cils mascara ($28.50) as recommended by socialite Vie Society on her eponymous blog. Sleek and dramatic, this mascara has a triple threat: three special films that combine volume, curve, and long lasting coverage. It gave a maximum length, along with a darker pigment as compared to other mascaras.

If there’s one event to attend this holiday season, mark your calendar for December 19th. The Candlelighters Young Professionals Group and Santa’s Little Helpers will be hosting a holiday party at The Social (3730 Washington) to support families whose children are stricken with cancer.

The festivities begin at 9:30. Sensual Soul, an R&B, pop, soul, & funk band, that played at the Margarita Taste Off this past June, will be on stage. This talented group can rock anything from Marvin Gaye to Outkast, the music will be amazing. Not to mention the cocktails! Free beer and H-Bombs, compliments of Hideous Liqueur, will be served. Pre-sale tickets cost $30 for Young Professional members and $40 for non-members. They will also be sold for $50 at the door.

Recessionista Party Tips

Staying within your budget at holiday time can be a challenge. Although the economy seems to be slowly recuperating, not everyone is flying first class or popping champagne corks these days.

Imagine that you received an invitation to a holiday get together or birthday party at a swanky restaurant. It seems like the perfect place for a chic group dinner, until you realize that this may cost $200/person. It’s natural to feel intimidated when your friends are busy discussing Balenciaga and all that’s on your mind is bills, bills, bills. Should you cancel? After all, it would be wrong to attend a dinner that can’t you pay for, right?
