Houstonian Spotlight: "Judy Nichols"
Posted by: Leslie Tyler Fink on Mar 26, 2010
Working for a society magazine has its perks. I get to meet a lot of amazing people, dress up, and cover fabulous events around town. Recently I sat down with Public Relations extraordinaire Judy Nichols, a woman who's got this gig down to a science. She's been working the Houston social scene since the 1970's!
Leslie: How long have you lived in Houston?
Judy: Over 35 years, I moved from Hong Kong. My brother and a friend lived here. There was not much going on here back then.
Leslie: How did you get into Public Relations?
Judy: I got in accidentally, at the time I was working for The Town & Country Sheraton in sales and marketing. I was asked to help promote several projects and it evolved over the years. It was self taught journalism.
Leslie: What do you like about Houston?
Judy: Its high energy, people are dynamic and friendly and it's an easy place to live.
Leslie: What are some of your favorite events and galas?
Judy: Celebrity Paws Gala, Ballet Ball, Santa Maria Hostel, Astro Wives Gala and Northwest Heart Ball.
Leslie: The Ballet Ball was fun this year.... I loved covering the gala for my "Fashion Police" column. Thank you to you and your firm for the invitation!
Rumor has it, we worked our way through the kitchen....:) (laughing)
Judy: That's funny because it was at the Wortham Center and they don't even have a kitchen! (laughing)
Leslie: There you go...
Its comical the gossip some will say!
Leslie: How do you choose what you will wear? Do you go shopping specifically for the event?
Judy: When I'm out shopping and I see something I like or have to have, I buy it because I know I will wear it to one of my events.
Leslie: Where do you like to shop for your gowns?
Judy: Linda Cunningham, Carrugis, and Veneto
Leslie: What's your favorite restaurant in Houston?
Judy: Mo's A Place For Steaks on Post Oak
Leslie: What's your favorite thing about Mo's?
Judy: The fun atmosphere, Chef Eric Aldis, the steaks and the Carolyn Farb Guacamole as a starter.
Leslie: What do you like to do with your free time?
Judy: Cooking... its "therapy" for me and they call me " The Queen of BBQ" because I make my own BBQ sauce.
Leslie: Where have you traveled recently?
Judy: Ten friends and I went on "The Oasis of The Sea" Caribbean cruise... its the worlds largest for 7,000 people and its 7 floors... it went to St. Thomas, St. Martin and The Bahamas and we had a fabulous time!
Thank you Judy Nichols for all that you do for Houston. Continue to sizzle the socials and the socialables!
XO, Leslie Tyler Fink
